Barbados Transportations


The highway system had a total length of 1,600 km in 2004, virtually all of which was paved; there were 44,300 passenger cars and 15,600 commercial vehicles registered in 2000.

Grantley Adams International Airport, situated 18 km southeast of Bridgetown, is the only airport. Barbados is served by one local and 14 international airlines. There is also a helicopter shuttle service, which offers air taxi services to a number of sites around the island, mainly on the West Coast tourist belt.

Barbados has a deep water harbour at Bridgetown, with berthing facilities for cruise ships and freighters. In 2008, Barbados had a merchant fleet of 85 ships of 1,000 GRT or over. The Barbados ships registry is the second Ships Registry worldwide that received Lloyd's Registry Quality Assurance approval under the Quality Management System Standard ISO 9002.
